Michael's role is primarily around water quality and ensuring that the objectives of various programs are guided by the best available science. This includes how this translates to better management practices of reef contaminants from catchment sources such as agricultural and urban runoff.

Michael also plays a pivotal role in the collection of water quality data within the Wet Tropics region which supports a number of important programs including the Wet Tropics Water Quality Improvement Plan, Wet Tropics Natural Resource Management Plan, Herbert Water Quality Monitoring Program, and Paddock to Reef Monitoring and Modeling Program.
